Quadrantids Meteor Shower 2013

Quadrantids Meteor Shower is the first meteor shower of the year occuring around Jan 1-6, it's peak being on Jan 2nd and 3rd.So,tonight (Jan. 2-3) is the peak of the 2013 Quadrantid meteor shower. The  meteor rates increase after midnight and peak between 3 a.m. and dawn, your local time.  The maximum rate will be about 120/hour

To view Quadrantids you will need cloudless, dark skies away from city lights to see the shower. However, light from the waning gibbous moon will wash out fainter meteors, so one can't expect to see that many.

The peak rate of the Quadrantids has varied between 60-200, so its peak is not as consistent as the other shower. Also the peak lasts for only a few hours so it's either January 3rd or nothing!

Here's a picture I found on spacedex.com that would help you locate the Radiant(The point in which meteors arise from)

The Quadrantids Meteor Shower-Where Do I look!

If you're in the Northern Hemisphere you need to look towards the North-East towards the Big Dipper

The meteor shower is expected to "last only a few hours," according to NASA.com. That means you should look for it in the the night of Jan. 2-3, not the night of Jan. 3-4. The best time to view the meteors will be between then and sunrise.

If there is cloud cover or you can't get away from the blinding city lights (like me=/),you can click on the link to watch the Online streaming of the Quadrantid meteor shower on Jan. 2-4 on NASA.com.

Hope you guys can view some shooting stars and wish upon them unlike me.Do share your pictures or videos. As for me I'm gonna go and try my luck once more before I give up!

"Caught in the Rain" - Shankar Tucker ft. Rohan Kymal

It was not long ago when I chanced upon O Re Piya/Rolling In The Deep by Shankar Tucker ft. Rohan Kymal.Absolutely loved it! And now "Caught In The Rain".

Such a mellifluous number that once it ends you can't do without listening it 'just once more'

I love Shankar Tucker's compositions..They are rich, mellow and soothing.

As for Rohan Kymal. His pronunciation is a bit off when it comes to Hindi but with a melodious voice like that, who's complaining?!

Hope you guys like it!

Save The Girl Child

zoey-female pup-rhodasian-orphan pup
Zoey-The cutest little puppy
A few days back I noticed a litter of puppies in the compound where I live.I used to watch them from a distance(don't really know how to be around dogs..ah! another story). They would loiter around in the campus, running behind their mother, tripping and falling as they learnt to take their baby steps.A playful bunch I tell you!..However, after a few days I saw just one of them remaining.I couldn't figure out what possibly could have happened(dreading the worst that could've).

She lay unaware
I asked the woman who works here.I was informed that one was adopted by someone who lived here and all the other puppies were sold by the owner of the place. Why not this one? I asked. And what I heard was something that was quite unsettling.."Because she is a female"..I'm not an expert on dogs so I could not figure out why this gender bias but in a place like India where female foeticide and the likes are common this was something that shouldn't have come as a surprise. However, I was stunned for a moment.

Oblivious to the world around her...
I looked at the pup.She was the cutest little thing I had ever seen. Two little brown ears and a clear white face with a small back nose. She looked so innocent. My heart reached out to her.If only I was not handicapped in expressing love to dogs I would have picked her up in my arms.I saw her playing with something..chewing on it with all intent of crushing it with her teeth.I looked at her and wondered, "Who will save this girl child?".

Yet she seemed to ask, "Why me?"
I showed the pictures of this li'l one to my fiance, who's a pet lover btw. He asked me to buy some pedigree for her. and give her a bath. I knew giving her a bath was off-limits considering my inhibitions.I gave her bread to eat.I was to undertake a journey that night.I made a mental note to come back and buy pedigree.

"Zoey"...ain't that a cute name for her?
I came back a couple of days back and in a strange way I was thinking of getting back and feeding her.May be it was the puppy's cute face or the compassion with which my fiance talked about it..I don't know but I realized I had missed her. While I was in the train my thoughts would drift off to names I could think of for her. couldn't wait to be back.May be "Zoey" would help me end my awkwardness towards pets especially dogs.

As I entered my house I looked around, hoping to see her wagging her tail and running towards me(I'm quite sure I would've run had she actually come too close to me:P).I didn't get a glimpse of her until much later.I saw two girls playing with her, much at ease than I could be in ages..They called her "Patchy". It seemed very obvious why.I wished silently if I could have been a little early.Nonetheless I was happy for her. They had saved the Girl Child:)

Tree-felling-cut down A few days ago outside my college I saw something that was ghastly. All the trees from in the parking area of the Kasturba Medical College OPD (Manipal) were razed to the ground. The sight was nothing less than that of a place after an earthquake.Everything that was green was gone.It was a really unsettling feeling.Although work kept me busy but my mind would find a way to let my thoughts wander back to that sight. Is it not illegal? I thought. However I got to know about some concept of a particular area having a definite percentage of green cover and according to that felling of these trees did not bring that down.Knowing that was no consolation for me though.Anyway, as a remembrance kind of a thing I thought I would upload some pictures of trees that I have taken now and then..

Hanging in there!

I hear the wind among the trees
Playing the celestial symphonies;
I see the branches downward bent,
Like keys of some great instrument.

Edit ME Challenge Week 22

Utter disappointment...Is all I have to say...I opened the Edit Me page when it was just 3 mins to close of submission..anyway I did whatever I could...as fast as I could...but by the time I entered the submission it said "collection closed"...

Anyway...here's the edit I came up with...I call it the "Quick Edit"

What I basically did was increased the exposure and contrast and the highlights and shadows a bit...gave it a pink tint...that's about it...

Oh and I edited this using iphoto!

This Year Diwali is going to be different!

Sky Lanterns
I have never looked forward to Diwali in Manipal with such enthusiasm as this year...Every year we would have exams and while everybody "ooh-ed and aah-ed" to fireworks show(organized every year by the Manipal University),we saw it as a distraction to our already futile attempts at mugging up lessons...

However, this year is different. We are interns now..and can enjoy diwali for the first time in five years..and what makes it more special is an event called LIGHT MANIPAL 2011,an initiative by Calvin Teo and his friends...all students of Manipal University.

LIGHT MANIPAL 2011 will witness scores of sky lanterns being launched into the night sky of Manipal on Oct 25.The organizers have ordered hundreds of sky lanterns from ebay and have decided to donate the profits towards church repairs and other social activities.

The sky lanterns are the perfect substitute for fire crackers. They are eco-friendly..do not pollute the environment and are biodegradable. The skylanterns have been test launched successfully.I watched the lantern rise up in the sky and wondered how astounding the sight of several hundreds of these in the sky would be..

Really looking forward to Diwali:):)
